UPDATE: Renowned Montenegrin writer Milorad Popović has issued a stark warning about the rising tensions in the Balkans, stating that the region is once again on edge, reminiscent of the conflicts of the 1990s. In an exclusive interview with “Slobodna Bosna,” Popović criticized the current leadership in Montenegro, calling them nationalistic and ineffective.
Popović’s comments come in light of a recent controversy involving the mayor of Pljevlja, who made derogatory remarks about the Bosniak community. “I am ashamed that my country is governed by nationalists and incompetents,” Popović stated, drawing parallels between today’s political climate and the ethnic cleansing campaigns of the past.
He emphasized that the political turmoil in Montenegro is shocking only to those unaware of the complex history between Montenegrins and Serbs. “Since the assassination attempt on King Nikola in 1907, the struggle between the advocates of a ‘Greater Serbia’ and the Montenegrin people has continued,” he explained.
Popović further elaborated on the destructive impact of Serbian nationalism, which he describes as “imperialistic and messianic.” He highlighted that while Serbia has faced defeat in four wars, it persists in its ambitions to dominate its neighbors, leaving a trail of destruction and suffering behind.
He also addressed the human cost of these nationalist ideologies, recalling the devastating wars that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and displacements. “The ideology has not only ravaged the region but also continues to threaten its stability,” Popović warned.
Looking specifically at the current situation, he pointed out that Bosniaks and Albanians in Montenegro are now among the most vulnerable groups, often caught in a political game driven by opportunists. “The collaboration between certain political factions and nationalist groups undermines the very fabric of Montenegrin society,” he noted.
Popović’s reflections serve as a rallying call for unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Montenegro and beyond. He believes that it is crucial for all communities to come together to resist the encroaching influence of Serbian nationalism—a sentiment echoed in the recent protests held across Montenegro.
As the situation develops, Popović urges all citizens to remain vigilant and proactive. “Montenegro must not only survive but thrive as an independent state,” he stated emphatically.
With the looming threats from external forces and the internal strife that echoes past conflicts, the message is clear: the time for action is now. As tensions rise, observers are left wondering what the future holds for Montenegro and the broader Balkan region.
As the international community watches closely, the urgency for a cohesive and peaceful response has never been more critical. Will the people of Montenegro rise to the occasion, or will the past repeat itself? Only time will tell.
