Barcelona is actively monitoring defender Pau Torres as the club prioritizes the acquisition of a left-sided centre-back for next summer. According to reports from ESPN, the Catalan club’s need for reinforcement has intensified following the departure of key defender Jules Koundé earlier this year, which has left coach Hansi Flick searching for stability in his defensive lineup.
The current options in the heart of Barcelona’s defence include Ronald Araújo, Eric García, and Andreas Christensen. However, Flick has struggled to establish a consistent pairing throughout the season. Recently, with Araújo on a mental health break and García shifted to midfield, Flick has even utilized left-back Marc Cucurella in a central defensive role. This change aims to enhance the team’s possession game by leveraging Cucurella’s left-footed capabilities.
As Barcelona looks to bolster their defensive options, Torres has emerged as a primary target due to his strong aerial ability and proficiency with the ball. The Villarreal academy product joined Aston Villa in 2023 for a fee of approximately €40 million (around $47 million). Despite his key role in Unai Emery‘s setup at Villa Park, Barcelona is reportedly optimistic about the possibility of persuading Torres to return to Spain, especially if they make a serious approach.
In addition to Torres, Barcelona is considering other candidates to strengthen their backline. One notable name is Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund. The German international, who has been on Barcelona’s radar since his breakout season, is under contract until 2027. If he does not extend his deal, Barcelona could potentially acquire him at a reduced price next summer, with other major European clubs also monitoring his situation.
Barcelona’s pursuit of new players will hinge on their financial circumstances, particularly their compliance with LaLiga‘s financial fair play regulations. The club might create additional financial flexibility through the expected departures of high-earning players, including Christensen and Robert Lewandowski, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the current season.
While no final decisions have been reached regarding the futures of Christensen or Lewandowski, the potential exit of the Danish defender would further compel Barcelona to invest in a new centre-back. With their defence having conceded 31 goals in 23 games across all competitions this season, the urgency for reinforcements is palpable as they aim to strengthen their squad for the upcoming campaign.
