Bovey Tracey Plans New 420-Pupil Primary School by 2029

Bovey Tracey, a town located on the edge of Dartmoor, is exploring the possibility of establishing a new primary school that could accommodate up to 420 pupils by 2029. The proposal is contingent on securing the necessary funding for construction. The town’s mayor, Cllr Sheila Brooke, expressed optimism about the plans, stating, “We’re keeping everything crossed.”

The proposed school would be situated on land owned by Bovey Tracey Town Council, adjacent to Le Molay-Littry Way. This initiative aims to replace the existing 280-pupil facility located on Abbey Road, which has become outdated as the community continues to grow.

Recent developments indicate that the project has progressed following an initial feasibility study funded by Teignbridge District Council. Conducted by Devon County Council, this study confirmed the necessity of further ecological surveys, which are expected to take approximately a year to complete. These surveys will provide critical information regarding the environmental impact of the proposed school and help generate a more accurate estimate of the overall costs.

A statement from Teignbridge District Council clarifies that while the feasibility study marks a step forward, it does not guarantee funding or commitment to the project. The council noted, “Delivering a new school is a long-term project. If the surveys, design, permissions, and funding can be secured, delivery of a school may be possible by 2029.”

Cllr Brooke highlighted the broader benefits of the new school, emphasizing that it would offer additional outdoor facilities for the entire community, thereby serving as a vital resource for Bovey Tracey. “We thank Teignbridge and Devon for their efforts so far and hope we can secure the promise of a new school in advance of any changes that might come about as a result of the Local Government Review,” she remarked.

While the focus remains on the new school, there is speculation regarding the future of the current school site. Cllr Brooke indicated that it might be considered for a housing scheme aimed at older residents. She reaffirmed the town council’s commitment to ensuring that any developments meet the needs of the community rather than commercial interests. “We are very keen to see it put to a use that meets Bovey’s needs and not those of a commercial developer. That’s a message we’ll repeat loud and clear for as long as it takes,” she stated.

The location for the proposed school, situated opposite the entrance to De Tracey Park, is currently accessed via a track known as Bucks Lane. As Bovey Tracey continues to evolve, the establishment of this new primary school represents a significant step toward accommodating the educational needs of its growing population. The community eagerly awaits further updates as the project progresses.
