Urgent: Royal Mail Faces Major Delays Ahead of Christmas Rush

The company is grappling with high levels of sickness absence and severe “resourcing issues” at local offices, particularly in Glasgow, Dundee, and Paisley.

As the festive period intensifies, Royal Mail is rotating delivery operations to minimize disruptions, but many communities in Aberdeenshire, Fife, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire, and South Lanarkshire are feeling the impact of these delays. “We know how important letters and parcels are, especially in the run-up to Christmas,” a Royal Mail spokesperson stated.

Recent reports reveal that only 73.4% of first-class mail was delivered on time between June 20 and September 28, raising concerns about the company’s reliability. The second-class mail performance was slightly better, with 90.4% delivered within three working days.

Royal Mail’s struggles have not gone unnoticed by regulators. The company was recently fined £21 million by Ofcom for failing to meet its mail delivery targets for the 2024-25 financial year. An Ofcom spokesperson commented, “In recent years, we’ve fined Royal Mail £37 million for its poor letter delivery performance, and we’ll continue to hold the company to account.”

In an effort to combat these ongoing issues, Royal Mail has announced plans to hire approximately 20,000 additional workers to assist with the transportation, sorting, and delivery of mail during the busy holiday season. This surge in staffing aims to bolster operations and improve overall service.
