Meetup Launches Redesigned App to Boost In-Person Connections

Meetup has introduced a redesigned mobile application aimed at enhancing user experience and encouraging in-person interactions. The updated app began rolling out on November 1, 2024, aligning with the platform’s recent website overhaul. Users can expect a more vibrant and modern interface featuring updated fonts, colorful icons, and improved spacing, all designed to make navigating the app easier and more engaging.

The changes come as Bending Spoons, the Italian tech company that acquired Meetup in 2024, seeks to capitalize on a resurgence in platform usage. Notably, as of late 2025, individuals from Generation Z and young Millennials account for 40 percent of Meetup’s active user base. The app has also experienced a 20 percent increase in new registrations year-over-year, indicating a growing interest in its offerings.

New Features to Enhance User Engagement

According to Chiara Vivaldi, Meetup’s product lead, the redesign retains essential features from the previous version while making them more accessible. Users can now access their profiles and groups directly from the app’s homepage. One significant enhancement is the introduction of a gender and age breakdown for event attendees, aimed at fostering a more inclusive environment, particularly for women.

To further support community building, Meetup is launching a new badge for top event organizers, known as the Super Organizer badge. This feature is intended to signal to users that these organizers are committed to creating quality events. “These updates are designed to reduce the friction of attending events where participants may not know anyone,” Vivaldi explained. The company plans to build on these features in the future to enhance the overall user experience.

Streamlined Tools for Organizers

Bending Spoons is also focusing on improving the experience for event organizers. Starting in early 2025, Meetup plans to merge its two existing apps into a single platform. Currently, Meetup maintains separate applications for members and organizers. The new unified app will include all necessary features for organizers, alongside enhancements such as QR-based ticketing for event check-ins and attendance tracking.

Vivaldi noted that approximately 75 percent of Meetup’s organizers began as members of the community. “They want to be in the action, and so having them within the same app is conducive to that,” she stated. This integration is designed to encourage greater interaction among users, making the platform feel more organic and dynamic.

For those who have not engaged with Meetup recently, the redesigned app is available for download on both the App Store and Google Play. The updates reflect a strategic effort by Bending Spoons to revitalize Meetup and promote its role as a facilitator of real-life connections, particularly following the challenges posed by the pandemic.
