UPDATE: As Christmas approaches, Ukrainian refugee families like that of Tetiana Levchenko are grappling with uncertainty amid ongoing geopolitical turmoil. With recent changes in the UK’s asylum system, the hope for stability feels increasingly fragile.
This year marks a significant shift for Ukraine, as the country officially moved its Christmas celebration to December 25, aligning with Western traditions. “Regardless of the date, the spirit of the season remains the same, filled with light and hope,” Levchenko shares, reflecting the resilience of her family despite their harrowing journey from war-torn Ukraine.
Since the full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022, the toll has been devastating, with estimated casualties among Ukrainians reaching between 60,000 and 100,000. As negotiations for peace continue, the emotional scars of war linger heavily. “I’ll never forget that morning of February 24, the sound of missiles, the fear in my son’s eyes,” Levchenko recalls.
Originally from Mariupol, Levchenko fled with her husband, son, and baby daughter, navigating chaos as they sought refuge. Arriving in Sheffield in April 2022 under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, they found temporary solace with a host family, who has since become part of their life.
With 272,945 visas issued to Ukrainian refugees as of March 31, 2025, many families face uncertainty. Levchenko’s family, despite their newfound stability, is concerned about the lack of a clear path to permanent residency in the UK. “Living in limbo is emotionally tough,” she explains, reflecting on the anxiety surrounding the latest asylum rules announced by UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, which could complicate their future further.
As Christmas nears, Levchenko plans to celebrate with a blend of Ukrainian and British traditions, cooking festive dishes and exchanging gifts with her children and their godparents. “We’ll visit our friends and make new memories,” she says, highlighting the importance of community in these challenging times.
