Cardiff Road Transforms into Festive Advent Calendar, Raises £700

BREAKING: A vibrant community initiative has transformed Canada Road in Cardiff into a captivating “walk-through advent calendar,” generating over £700 for Cardiff Foodbank. This festive project, supported by local businesses and schools, is spreading holiday cheer while helping families in need.

Residents in the Gabalfa area unveiled the first window display on December 1, with daily reveals that showcase unique festive decorations from one or two homes each day leading up to Christmas. The enchanting displays will remain visible until January 5, the traditional date for taking down holiday decorations.

Organizers, including local resident Nic Humphries, expressed their astonishment at the community’s generosity. “We weren’t sure how effective a project like this would be, but we have been amazed by people’s generosity. Every day there is something new to look forward to,” she said, highlighting the positive impact on residents’ daily lives, especially during the rainy season.

The initiative is a collaborative effort involving St Monica’s Church in Wales Primary School, which recently moved to the area, contributing to a deeper sense of community. Head teacher Abigail Cuthbert remarked, “We were very happy to get involved and help our new neighbors support Cardiff Foodbank and the wonderful services it provides.”

Local businesses, including Morgans Consult and Cant a Mil Bookshop, have also played a crucial role in making this event possible. Managing director Mike Kitchin noted, “Seeing residents, schools, and local businesses come together to bring a little extra Christmas warmth to the local area, while raising vital funds to support struggling families, has been amazing to see.”

This is the second year for the advent windows project, but it marks the inaugural effort to raise funds for charity. The planning began in October when residents voted to support Cardiff Foodbank, which is part of the Trussell network providing emergency food and support to those in crisis.

Rachel Biggs, CEO of Cardiff Foodbank, expressed her gratitude for the community’s efforts. “This is such a lovely community-led fundraiser; we’re really grateful for all the donations,” she stated. Biggs also highlighted the critical need for awareness, noting that last winter, Cardiff Foodbank distributed enough food to prepare 47,907 meals, with over half of those served being children.

Community members are encouraged to support the initiative by donating through the project’s JustGiving page. Those in need of emergency food assistance can visit Cardiff Foodbank’s website for more information.

As the festive season progresses, this heartwarming project not only brightens the local community but also reinforces the spirit of giving, ensuring that help reaches those who need it most.
