A remarkable effort by Kimberley Davies has raised £2,620 for the maternity bereavement room at Glangwili Hospital in Wales. In September 2025, Davies, alongside her close friend Carrie, completed the challenging British Three Peaks hike, which includes Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Yr Wyddfa in just three days. This endeavor was especially poignant for Davies, as it coincided with what would have been the due date for her twin daughters, Sophie and Lara, who tragically passed away in June.
On the final ascent of Yr Wyddfa, Davies and Carrie were joined by approximately 30 family members and friends, ranging in age from eight to 81. Reflecting on the experience, Kimberley remarked on the challenges faced during the hike, particularly due to adverse weather conditions. “We had a yellow weather warning for wind and rain on each of the mountains,” she noted. “Ben Nevis was minus one degree with strong winds, and Scafell Pike presented its own difficulties with heavy rainfall making it slippery and dangerous.”
Raising Awareness and Funds
Davies undertook this challenge not only to generate funds but also to raise awareness about the often-silent experience of baby loss. Following the loss of her daughters due to Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, she sought a positive way to channel her grief. “I want to raise awareness of the negative outcomes in pregnancy,” she explained. “Many experience the loss of their babies, but sadly it’s not spoken about.”
The funds raised will enhance the facilities in the Pili Pala bereavement room at Glangwili Hospital, allowing for improvements that go beyond standard NHS funding. “The support I received from the medical team in the bereavement room was phenomenal,” Davies added. “Compassionate staff made such a terrible time a little easier, thanks to everyone’s kindness.”
She expressed her desire to give back as a way to show gratitude for the care she received. “I’m hoping the money raised will benefit other families going through the loss of their babies,” she stated.
Community Support and Acknowledgments
Davies took a moment to acknowledge the support she received throughout her journey. “I would like to thank everyone who has donated, Carrie who walked all three mountains with me, friends and family who walked Yr Wyddfa, and everyone who has shown their support in other ways,” she said. “Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the staff on the bereavement suite in Glangwili.”
Midwife Anwen Evans praised Davies for her efforts. “At the maternity unit, we are extremely thankful to Kim, her family, and friends for taking on the incredible challenge of the Three Peaks to raise funds for the maternity bereavement room,” she stated. “Facing such difficult weather made your effort even more remarkable. Your courage and generosity in honouring their memory means more than words can express, and the generous amount of money raised will bring comfort to many other families in their darkest moments.”
This initiative not only commemorates the memory of Sophie and Lara but also highlights the importance of discussing baby loss and the support available for affected families.
