Shoppers who purchased turkeys from Tesco this holiday season faced an unpleasant surprise when many reported a rancid odour that rendered their Christmas dinners inedible. Complaints flooded social media platforms, with customers expressing their frustration after discovering the foul smell emanating from their turkey purchases.
Beth Mahoney, a consumer who bought her turkey just two days before Christmas, described the experience as a nightmare. According to YorkshireLive, Mahoney stated, “We bought our turkey two days ago, and it was in date until December 27. When we opened it, there was a really strong odour and the meat smelled awful.” She followed the instructions on the packaging, which suggested letting the turkey sit to dissipate the smell, but this did not alleviate the issue. “The smell made me feel physically ill,” she added, highlighting the distress caused by the incident.
Numerous other customers echoed similar sentiments on social media. One user, @GR4BRO, shared a photo of discoloured turkey meat, posting, “Tesco Class A turkey… hmmm. Rancid!” Another shopper, @Westy_26, lamented, “Thanks Tesco. Christmas ruined, opened our turkey to cook it and it’s rancid, only bought it Tuesday and has tomorrow’s date. Kids are crying, the wife is crying. Nice one.”
Many expressed relief that they had backup plans for their holiday meals. @pearsecassidy remarked, “Had to dump out our Tesco turkey today, the smell of it would’ve knocked you out – taking no chances, lucky we had a backup – never again.” Others were equally dismayed, with comments such as, “Our turkey is well manky. Can’t believe it. Christmas ruined right now.”
The situation has raised concerns regarding food safety and product quality. Tesco has been contacted for a comment regarding the string of complaints from customers. As shoppers prepare for holiday meals, the retailer’s response will be closely scrutinized to regain consumer trust and address the issues surrounding this year’s turkey supply.
The incidents have sparked discussions about food quality standards and the importance of ensuring that products meet safety regulations, especially during the holiday season when families gather to celebrate.
