UPDATE: Jet2 has just announced the launch of direct flights from Newcastle to its twinned city of Bergen, Norway, set to begin in April 2026. This development aims to rekindle connections that have waned since the last direct flights ended in 2022, marking a significant step towards stronger ties between these two cities.
Authorities in Bergen are hopeful that the new route will not only boost tourism but also enhance economic links. Mayor Marit Warncke expressed her optimism, stating, “I really hope that a lot of people in Newcastle and Bergen will take the opportunity to visit our two cities again because I think if it is a success, we could have it extended.”
The historical bond between Newcastle and Bergen dates back to World War II, with Bergen sending a Christmas tree to Newcastle annually from 1949 to 2022. Due to environmental concerns, this tradition has shifted to exchanging baubles during the annual Christmas lights switch-on for the past three years.
Recent figures from Bergen’s tourist board reveal that UK guest nights surged to over 108,000 between January and October in 2025, reflecting a remarkable 60 percent increase compared to the same period in 2019. This resurgence in interest highlights Bergen’s growing appeal among British travelers post-pandemic.
Anders Nyland, CEO of Visit Bergen, emphasized the potential for expanding the flight program, stating, “I hope that we’ll see full flights and I hope that Jet2 and/or other lines will fly to Bergen on a full-time basis.” He envisions at least one direct route operating several days a week, if not daily.
Mayor Warncke pointed out that the flight connection holds promise beyond tourism. She noted, “There are lots of companies in Newcastle and Bergen that work on offshore wind, underwater technology, and metal businesses, which could be further developed.” With current security concerns in Europe, the collaboration between the UK and Norway in these sectors becomes even more vital.
Jet2’s spokesperson shared their excitement about the expanded Bergen program, highlighting the diverse experiences awaiting travelers. “Bergen is proving to be a hugely popular destination,” they noted, citing buzzing bars, live music venues, and stunning waterfront views as attractions. The program will kick off on Thursday, April 2, 2026, with four city break options available for travelers from Newcastle International Airport.
For those seeking alternatives, flights to Bergen can also be booked through KLM with connections via Amsterdam Schipol, with return fares starting at just £117.
As anticipation builds for this exciting new route, residents of both cities are eager to see the positive outcomes it could bring. Stay tuned for updates on flight availability and further developments regarding this promising connection!
