Urgent Call for Action: Over 250 Crashes on A40 in Wales

UPDATE: The A40 in Carmarthenshire is under urgent scrutiny after reports confirm over 250 collisions on a 27-mile stretch between Carmarthen and Llandovery since January 2020. The alarming safety record has led to calls for immediate action from local politicians and the Welsh Government.

This vital roadway, which connects multiple towns and villages, has become a notorious hotspot for traffic accidents, with 249 collisions recorded just between January 2020 and June 2025. Tragically, two high-profile fatalities occurred recently, heightening concerns about road safety in the area.

In October 2024, a devastating motorbike crash claimed two lives near Llandovery. Just months later, in July 2025, 18-year-old Sally Allen was killed in a crash near Broad Oak while returning from the Royal Welsh Show. These incidents underscore the urgent need for safety improvements.

Local leaders are voicing their concerns. Adam Price, Member of the Senedd for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, stated, “The number of road traffic collisions along the A40 is deeply concerning. I urge the Welsh Government to implement necessary measures to enhance safety.” His comments reflect a growing demand for immediate governmental intervention.

Statistics reveal a troubling trend:
30 collisions in 2020
40 collisions in 2021
40 collisions in 2022
58 collisions in 2023
59 collisions in 2024
22 collisions so far in 2025

With more than one collision per week on this stretch of road, the need for action is dire. Ann Davies, MP for Caerfyrddin, characterized the figures as “alarming” and stressed that behind each statistic lies a personal story of loss and suffering. “Protecting lives must remain our top priority,” she said.

The Welsh Government acknowledges the issue. Cabinet Secretary for Transport Ken Skates stated, “We take road safety very seriously and routinely review collision data to inform improvements on the trunk road network.” However, many believe that these reassessments do not translate into timely action.

As the situation develops, communities are left asking what measures will be taken to ensure their safety. This pressing issue highlights the need for immediate governmental response and intervention.

Stay tuned for updates as officials work to address these critical safety concerns. The lives of drivers and families depend on it.
