URGENT UPDATE: Carol McInnes, Director of Planning and Transformation at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), has just been awarded the prestigious title of ‘Finance Champion of the Year’ at the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Awards. This recognition underscores her exceptional commitment to financial recovery and transformation within the NHS.
Since taking on her role in November 2024, McInnes has been pivotal in driving the trust’s financial recovery initiatives, particularly at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. Under her leadership, SaTH has made remarkable strides, achieving £24.9 million in efficiency savings this year alone, and is on track to meet a target of £41.4 million for the fiscal year 2025/26.
The HFMA judges highlighted McInnes’ “skill and humility in engaging people” in the critical work of recovery and transformation. They noted her as a “role model” who is fostering optimism for the future of the NHS. Her efforts have not only led to significant financial improvements but have also emphasized maintaining high standards of patient safety and quality care.
In addition to McInnes’ accolade, SaTH’s Deputy Chief Nurse, Kara Blackwell, received high commendation in the ‘Working with Finance – Clinician of the Year’ category, further showcasing the trust’s commitment to excellence.
McInnes expressed her gratitude, stating, “This award is recognition for the whole team and all that it has achieved over the last few years. SaTH is heading in the right direction, and it’s great to see this progress being showcased on a national stage.”
Adam Winstanley, Acting Director of Finance, praised her achievements, saying, “I’m delighted that Carol has been recognised with a national award for her hard work and dedication – it is a huge achievement which is thoroughly deserved.” He emphasized the trust’s responsibility to balance financial stability with the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
Since the establishment of the Trust’s Financial Recovery Taskforce in 2024, McInnes has fostered strong relationships with system partners, enabling SaTH to share its learnings and support other NHS providers in their recovery efforts.
This award not only highlights individual excellence but also reflects the broader commitment of SaTH to improving healthcare services in Shropshire and Mid Wales. As the NHS continues to face challenges, McInnes’ leadership and innovative strategies are critical in shaping a sustainable future for healthcare in the region.
As developments continue, the healthcare community and local residents will be watching closely to see how these achievements influence patient care and organizational stability moving forward. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story.
