China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced a significant regulatory change affecting electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. Under new draft rules, all vehicles weighing under 3.5 tons must be equipped with interior and exterior door handles featuring a mechanical emergency release. This directive effectively bans the use of retractable door handles, a design popularized by Tesla, on new vehicles sold in China starting from January 1, 2027.
The decision to prohibit these handle designs arises from safety concerns. A recent analysis by Bloomberg linked 15 fatalities directly to incidents involving Tesla’s retractable door handles, which failed to open in emergencies. Although many EVs incorporate mechanical releases within the vehicle, numerous reports indicate that owners struggled to locate or operate these mechanisms during critical moments, raising alarms over passenger safety.
Impact on Tesla and Other EV Manufacturers
The ban will have far-reaching implications for all EV manufacturers, including BYD, a major player in the Chinese automotive market. However, Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, is likely to face the most significant challenges. Currently, every Tesla model features these retractable handles, necessitating a swift redesign to comply with the new regulations. With approximately one year remaining before the rules take effect, the company must adapt its manufacturing processes to meet safety standards in China.
Tesla’s troubles regarding door handles may extend beyond China. U.S. regulators are investigating safety issues related to Tesla’s flush-mounted electronic door handles. Reports have surfaced from owners who experienced difficulties entering or exiting their vehicles due to battery power loss. In several instances, first responders were compelled to break vehicle windows to rescue children trapped inside Tesla cars.
As the global EV market continues to evolve, safety regulations are tightening. China’s move to ban retractable door handles emphasizes the increasing scrutiny manufacturers face in ensuring passenger safety. With the deadline approaching, Tesla and other automakers must prioritize compliance to maintain their presence in one of the world’s largest automotive markets.
