The popular show The Masked Singer is set to return on January 3-4, 2024, with a groundbreaking change in its format. For the first time, the opening episodes will feature complete bands, shifting the focus from individual performers to the lead vocalists. The panellists will be tasked with identifying these lead singers from the groups, adding a new layer of excitement to the viewing experience.
The first episode will showcase Goldfish and their band No Trout, followed by Emperor Penguin and the Antarctic Funkeys in the second episode. This change comes on the heels of a holiday special where a star from the show This Morning was unmasked, generating significant buzz around the upcoming series.
Throughout the latest season, the show’s detectives – Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and Maya Jama – will also work to uncover the identities of 12 additional masked performers. The season is poised to kick off with an impactful double bill that includes four unmaskings.
This year’s line-up features an eclectic mix of characters, including Moth, Can of Worms, Red Panda, Conkers, Arctic Fox, Toastie, Monkey Business, Yak, Sloth, Gargoyle, Disc Jockey, and Teabag. These additions promise to enhance the show’s dynamic atmosphere.
Presenter Joel Dommett shared his enthusiasm about the new format, stating that incorporating bands injects “so much energy in the room.” He emphasized that the first two episodes have been creatively mixed to enhance viewer engagement. Dommett remarked on the significance of the initial unmaskings, describing them as “pretty substantial.”
The panellists expressed excitement about the season’s increased pace and activity. Jonathan Ross noted that this season boasts more unmaskings than ever before, making it a challenge to keep up with the rapid developments. He humorously added, “Every week, we’ve barely got time to guess one, and the mask’s off! You’re going to have a lot more fun playing at home.”
Davina McCall described the series as feeling “fresh,” highlighting the introduction of new ideas that keep the panel on their toes. Mo Gilligan shared a personal experience from the season, revealing that he had the opportunity to join one of the performers on stage, which added an unexpected twist to the format.
Maya Jama expressed her admiration for one of the new characters, Can of Worms, noting the character’s impressive rapping ability. “They don’t miss a beat,” she said, further building anticipation for the series.
The panellists also commented on Dommett’s evolving wardrobe this season, which has included an array of vibrant jumpsuits. The camaraderie among the panelists appears to have deepened, contributing to an enjoyable atmosphere.
The show has previously featured a diverse range of celebrities, including Dionne Warwick, Prue Leith, Daisy May Cooper, Glenn Hoddle, Mel Giedroyc, Sir Lenny Henry, and Lorraine Kelly. The upcoming season promises to maintain the entertaining spirit that has captivated audiences.
As The Masked Singer prepares for its new format, viewers can tune in to ITV1 and ITVX on Saturday, January 3, and Sunday, January 4, at 18:30 to experience the excitement firsthand.
