As a true schoolmaster, Mr. McKinney was known for his traditional teaching methods and his instinctive understanding of boys. He excelled in creating a supportive environment, particularly for students who required additional assistance. His teaching style was direct and purposeful, fostering a sense of stability that many former students continue to cherish.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. McKinney significantly impacted the college’s rugby program. As the 1st XV Coach and later the Master in Charge of Rugby, he guided the team to four Schools’ Cup victories and helped many boys achieve provincial and international recognition. His passion for athletics was equally evident; he led the College Athletics Club for over 27 years, becoming a familiar figure at the track every summer.

A Life of Dedication and Community Spirit

In addition to his coaching roles, Mr. McKinney held several key positions throughout his career, including Head of Boarding and Head of Physical Education. He carried each role with a sense of distinction and unwavering loyalty to the college. His impeccable sense of style, often seen in tweed and brogues, complemented his gentlemanly demeanor.

The college’s tribute emphasized Mr. McKinney’s legacy, stating, “John McKinney’s legacy lives on in the traditions he upheld, the pupils he guided, and the spirit he embodied.” His dry humor and well-timed one-liners made him a favorite among students and staff alike, contributing to the warm community atmosphere at Campbell College.
