Dyson has unveiled its latest vacuum models, the V16 Piston Animal and Gen5detect, with a focus on weight reduction and user comfort. In an exclusive interview, Dyson engineer Steph Parker shared insights into the design ethos that guided the development of these new products. The company aims to balance innovation with comfort, particularly addressing concerns about the weight of its flagship cordless stick vacuums.
The V16 Piston Animal, which weighs 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg) with its wand and main floorhead attached, represents a significant achievement in the brand’s effort to minimize weight. Parker explained that maintaining a weight comparable to the previous flagship model, the Gen5, was a priority. “One way we did it was by switching the motor around, which allowed us to compress the overall size of the product,” she noted. This adjustment enabled the team to explore material optimizations, such as reducing wall thicknesses, to save weight without compromising performance.
Despite these efforts, Dyson’s models remain heavier than many competitors. For example, the V15 Detect, at 6.8 lbs (3 kg), is currently ranked as the lightest option in the Dyson lineup. While the newer models demonstrate a streamlined design, they still face criticism for their heft in a market increasingly favoring lighter alternatives.
Enhancing User Comfort
To improve comfort during use, Dyson has incorporated a pad above the handle of both the Gen5detect and V16 Piston Animal. This feature is intended to cushion the hand, which bears the brunt of the vacuum’s weight. “It’s designed so that it’s comforting the top of your hand, because that’s where the most of the weight is going,” Parker explained. However, there is a call for similar cushioning on the cheaper models, where users have reported discomfort during extended use.
Another area of concern is the design of the vacuum handles. Unlike competitors that offer ergonomic grips, Dyson’s straight-edged handles have drawn criticism for their lack of comfort. Parker indicated that while the company aims to accommodate a wide range of hand sizes—targeting the 95th percentile—there are no immediate plans to modify the handle shape. “We fine-tune the sizes of that handle… just to make sure it is as comfortable as possible,” she said.
Balancing Design and Functionality
The distinctive design of Dyson products is a hallmark of the brand, and Parker emphasized that structural integrity remains a top priority. “It’s probably mostly focused on structural aspects and just making sure the products are as robust as they can be while being comfortable to most of our users,” she stated. The rigorous testing process ensures that the vacuums meet high standards of durability and performance, which can sometimes come at the expense of comfort.
