Barry Manilow has shared a health update following his recent surgery to remove part of his lung due to a cancer diagnosis. The 82-year-old music icon took to social media from his hospital bed to inform fans about his recovery progress. Last month, he revealed that an MRI had detected a “cancerous spot” on his left lung, prompting the need for immediate medical intervention.
In his latest post, Barry expressed optimism, stating he was “better today.” He received an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues, including tour vocalist Melanie Taylor, who commented, “That’s my boss y’all! He’s making it through the rain! Love you B! [prayer emojis].”
Details of the Diagnosis and Surgery
Manilow first disclosed his lung cancer diagnosis while announcing the cancellation of his upcoming performances. He explained that after enduring six weeks of bronchitis, followed by another five weeks of illness, his doctor recommended an MRI for precautionary reasons. The test revealed the cancerous spot, which he characterized as fortunate due to its early detection.
Barry remarked, “It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news.” He added, “The bad news is that now that the Christmas Gift Of Love concerts are over, I’m going into surgery to have the spot removed.”
Fortunately, his medical team does not believe the cancer has spread, alleviating concerns that he would require chemotherapy or radiotherapy. “The doctors do not believe it has spread and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns,” he stated humorously.
Impact on Future Performances
As he embarks on his recovery journey, Barry Manilow is expected to take approximately one month off from performing, leading to the cancellation of his scheduled shows in the United States for January 2024. His fans eagerly await updates on his health and return to the stage, while his recent openness about his diagnosis has fostered a stronger connection with his audience.
Barry’s resilience and positive outlook during this challenging time serve as an inspiration to many. As he focuses on his recovery, the music world and his fans continue to rally around him, sending love and support as he works toward a full recovery.
