URGENT UPDATE: A father, Brian Wands, has shared a heartfelt tribute to the medical teams who saved his life after an extraordinary seven-month battle in hospitals, including four months in a coma. His journey began in March 2022 when he was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary due to severe pancreatitis.
Brian’s ordeal saw him spend 84 days in intensive care, undergo multiple life-saving surgeries, and receive a staggering 95-unit blood transfusion. Now, he expresses profound gratitude for the dedicated healthcare professionals who played a pivotal role in his recovery, emphasizing the blend of skill and compassion that marked his care.
In a moving letter to the health board, Brian stated, “I was kept alive and brought back by people who combined skill with compassion, consistency, and courage.” His tribute highlights the teamwork across various departments, including intensive care and high dependency units, which he credits for his survival.
Brian particularly recognized the contributions of key staff members, including consultant surgeons Euan Dickson, Fiona Leitch, and Phil Stevens. Intensive care consultant Dr. Tara Quasim was noted for her unwavering support during critical moments, while dietician Caroline and physiotherapist Jill Meldrum were commended for their significant roles in his recovery journey.
He also acknowledged the InS:PIRE clinic for helping his family understand the challenges they faced and supporting them toward normalcy. Brian’s transformation is remarkable; he is now practicing daily pilates, holding a five-minute plank, and preparing for his family’s first holiday in three years.
