Food giant Nestlé has initiated a recall of several baby formula products due to concerns they may contain a toxin linked to food poisoning. The affected items include specific batches of the company’s SMA infant formula and follow-on formula, which the Food Standards Agency (FSA) identified as potentially unsafe for infants.
The recall stems from the discovery of the cereulide toxin, produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus. If ingested, this toxin can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected products, Nestlé has taken the precautionary step of recalling these batches to safeguard consumer health.
In a statement, Nestlé explained that the issue was traced back to an ingredient supplied by a leading provider. Jane Rawling, head of incidents at the FSA, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, advising parents and caregivers not to feed these products to infants or young children. “Cereulide is a toxin produced by food poisoning bacteria Bacillus cereus, and can cause food poisoning symptoms which can be quick to develop,” she stated.
