Great Barrington Honors Henry Knox’s Noble Train of Artillery

UPDATE: Great Barrington is set to commemorate a pivotal moment in American history this Friday, January 10, 2024, with a public procession and ceremony honoring Colonel Henry Knox and his Noble Train of Artillery. This event marks the 248th anniversary of Knox’s historic journey through the Berkshires during the winter of 1776, a critical mission that helped turn the tide of the Revolutionary War.

The day’s observance kicks off at 2 p.m. at the Mahaiwe Theater, following a ceremonial procession departing from the Great Barrington Historical Society located at 817 South Main Street. The procession will feature a living-history portrayal of Knox, accompanied by reenactors, fifes and drums, draft horses, and sleds hauling a replica cannon bound for Boston. This symbolic journey replicates the Noble Train of Artillery, which delivered essential artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to the Continental Army, ultimately leading to the British evacuation of Boston and altering the course of the war.

The commemorative program at the Mahaiwe Theater will include remarks from key figures including Mary Tedesco, State Regent of the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution, and Professor Robert J. Allison, Chair of the Revolution 250 Committee. Attendees can also expect contributions from State Sen. Paul Mark and State Rep. Leigh Davis, along with representatives from the Office of the Governor of Massachusetts.

A notable highlight of the program will be the presentation of commemorative plaques to representatives from the Berkshire communities—Alford, North Egremont, Great Barrington, Monterey, Sandisfield, Otis, Russell, and Blandford—that supported Knox and his men during this critical campaign. These honors not only acknowledge the historic contributions of these towns but also celebrate the community spirit that fueled the fight for American independence.

This event, organized by Revolution 250 with support from MA250 and Berkshire 250, is part of an ongoing observance of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. It emphasizes the vital role of western Massachusetts in the Revolutionary struggle and the lasting impact of local actions on national history.

As the community comes together to honor this significant chapter, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of unity and sacrifice that shaped the foundation of the United States. Make sure to join the procession and commemorative program to witness history come alive in Great Barrington.
