East Lothian Pubs Weigh in on Late-Night Scotland World Cup Matches

Pubs in East Lothian are being consulted by local licensing authorities regarding their interest in broadcasting Scotland’s World Cup matches live. The men’s national team will participate in its first World Cup in 28 years, taking place this summer across Canada, the USA, and Mexico. Because of the tournament’s location, many matches will occur outside regular pub licensing hours, with some beginning as late as 2:00 AM UK time.

To gauge interest, East Lothian Council has launched a survey directed at pubs and licensed venues. The survey seeks to ascertain how many establishments would be willing to show the late-night matches and which specific games they would like to broadcast. Key fixtures include Scotland versus Haiti on June 14 at 2:00 AM, Scotland against Morocco on June 19 at 11:00 PM, and Scotland facing Brazil on June 24 at 11:00 PM.

The council’s initiative includes questions on whether pubs are willing to hire qualified stewards and sell tickets for these events to manage attendance effectively. The survey is available on the council’s consultation platform and will remain open until January 20.

In a related development, Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney announced plans to propose a national holiday following the team’s first game in Boston. Swinney aims to make June 15 a bank holiday in Scotland, contingent upon approval from the King. He also stated his commitment to collaborate with local authorities to extend pub hours, ensuring fans can celebrate the team’s historic return to the World Cup.

East Lothian Council has urged license holders to participate in the survey, emphasizing the importance of feedback in determining how the East Lothian Licensing Board will manage extended hours during the FIFA World Cup 2026. The council stated, “The board would appreciate you indicating your interest, by answering the following questions.”

The survey represents a proactive step by local authorities to engage with the community and accommodate the unique circumstances of this significant football event. As the excitement builds for Scotland’s participation in the World Cup, local venues are preparing to create an atmosphere that celebrates the team’s long-awaited return to the global stage.
