Maja Vučelić Critiques DNP’s Demands, Calls for Unity in Montenegro

Maja Vučelić, a member of the CIVIS party, has spoken out against recent demands from the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) following their approval of a series of conclusions that seek government support for constitutional amendments related to the Serbian language. They are also advocating for a law on dual citizenship, the establishment of a tricolor flag as the national flag, and changes to the location of a collector. Vučelić emphasized that these demands undermine the government’s platform, known as Barometar 26, which was adopted without opposition, including support from the DNP.

According to Vučelić, the Barometar 26 framework clearly commits all signatories to focus on unity and the integration of Montenegro into the European Union, while avoiding divisive identity issues. She pointed out that the DNP’s current requests, coupled with their admission that these demands contradict the platform, threaten to destabilize Montenegro politically as it heads into a critical year for European integration in 2026.

Calls for Focus on European Integration

Vučelić stated, “At a time when the EU shows readiness for expansion, Montenegro cannot afford to lose its focus.” She argued that European integration, the rule of law, and stability must take precedence over party ultimatums and political maneuvers that create divisions and blockages. She stressed that Montenegro requires unity among those genuinely committed to the nation’s vital objectives.

Furthermore, Vučelić remarked that it is essential for the government to clarify its position regarding those who are perceived as obstructing the European path of the country. “The government is not a platform for personal frustrations, and Montenegro is greater than any political games,” she asserted. Her comments reflect a growing concern about the political climate in Montenegro as the country navigates its aspirations for EU membership.

Implications for Montenegrin Politics

The Barometar 26 platform, which has garnered broad support, aims to ensure that Montenegro remains focused on its European future. Vučelić’s critique of the DNP’s recent demands highlights a potential rift within the political landscape, as parties grapple with aligning their agendas with the overarching goal of EU integration.

The DNP’s push for constitutional changes and other legislative measures could lead to increased tensions within the coalition government, especially as the nation approaches pivotal elections and crucial discussions regarding its European future. Vučelić’s statements serve as a reminder of the importance of political cohesion in addressing the challenges that lie ahead for Montenegro.

As the situation develops, the responses from other political parties and the government will be critical in shaping the path forward for Montenegro in its quest for EU membership and stability.
