Discussions with Carrick occurred on Thursday, while Solskjaer’s meeting took place over the weekend at Carrington, the club’s training facility.
The urgency for an appointment stems from the upcoming Manchester derby, where United will face Manchester City at Old Trafford on January 14, 2024. If Carrick is named the interim manager, he will inherit a squad struggling to regain its confidence after being eliminated from both domestic cup competitions. The team can now only secure a European spot through its league performance.
Fletcher expressed concern over the team’s morale following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup third round. He noted, “You can see that the players are fragile and they need to build themselves up because it’s up to them now – they have got to respond.” He emphasized the importance of confidence in football, stating that players must “dig deep” and “battle” to regain their form.
Despite his temporary role, Fletcher remains uncertain about his future with the club. He stated, “I’ve had zero indication,” referring to his prospects as he prepares for discussions at Carrington on Monday morning. Fletcher conveyed his commitment to the club, expressing disappointment at not securing a win during his time in charge. “It’s a massive responsibility to lead this club,” he said. “I care for the club and I want the club to do well.”
