Tributes Pour in for Former Wales Rugby Player Rob Mills, 45

Former international rugby player Rob Mills has passed away at the age of 45 after experiencing complications from a double-lung transplant. His death occurred on March 1, 2024, leading to an outpouring of tributes from the rugby community in Wales and beyond. Described as a “gentle giant,” Mills had a significant impact on the sport, both on and off the field.

Mills began his career at Rhayader Rugby Club and later served as a player-coach there. He also played for Builth Wells and Caerleon during his career. Mills gained recognition representing Wales at the under-21 level and was affiliated with the Scarlets from 2000 to 2002. He later became a celebrated member of Wales’ deaf rugby team, contributing to various international tours and competitions.

In a heartfelt statement released through Builth Wells RFC, his wife, Jade Mills, expressed her profound grief. She stated, “Rob was my absolute whole world, we loved each other so intensely. We thought that after Rob had had his double lung transplant we would get that life that we so desperately wanted, but devastating complications repeatedly kept happening and I have now forever lost my love.” Jade also highlighted Mills’ devotion to their son, Morgan Robert Mills, saying he “idolised his boys.”

The Builth Wells RFC community expressed their sorrow in a statement, emphasizing Mills’ contributions to rugby: “Rob’s rugby journey was one of real achievement,” they noted. “He will always be part of the Builth Wells RFC family.”

The Wales Rugby Union Deaf team also paid tribute, highlighting Mills’ dedication and toughness on the field. They remembered him as “a true warrior” who represented Wales in various international matches, including tours to South Africa and Norway. The team remarked on his ability to leave an “indelible mark” on Wales Deaf Rugby, stating, “He was a larger-than-life character, and a great person to have in and around your team.”

Members of the rugby community, including Nigel Puddy, president of Caerleon RFC, shared their memories of Mills. Puddy described him as “a lovely man” and a “hard player,” noting his generosity during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “He was a very, very generous man,” Puddy said, recalling how Mills helped others in need during tough times.

In light of Mills’ passing, Caerleon RFC is considering ways to honour his legacy, including a potential tribute during their upcoming matches. The club plans to observe a minute’s silence before their match against Garndiffaith, reflecting the profound loss felt by teammates and fans alike.

Mills’ contributions to rugby and the impact he had on those around him will be remembered fondly. As tributes continue to pour in, the Welsh rugby community stands united in mourning the loss of a beloved figure.
