Multi-Vehicle Collision Causes Major Delays on M6 Northbound

A multi-vehicle collision on the M6 northbound carriageway near junction 9, affecting the Wednesbury and Walsall area, caused significant traffic delays this morning. The incident resulted in the closure of two lanes, leading to several miles of congestion during peak travel hours.

According to National Highways: West Midlands, both lanes 2 and 3 were closed to facilitate the removal of the crashed vehicles. Traffic officers were deployed to manage the situation, which resulted in approximately two miles of slow-moving traffic in the area.

In a statement on social media platform X, National Highways provided updates, saying, “Traffic Officers are on scene and recovery en route. There are approx. 2 miles congestion in the area on approach, so allow extra travel time.”

After the initial blockage, all lanes were eventually reopened, but the flow of traffic remained sluggish due to onlookers. West Midlands Police temporarily held traffic to ensure safe removal of the vehicles involved.

Later updates indicated that all lanes on the M6 northbound within junction 9 were open. National Highways advised motorists to expect delays as normal traffic patterns resumed. “Please allow extra journey time whilst traffic flow returns to normal. Congestion is back to junction 1 of the M5 presently,” they added.

Traffic data monitor Inrix reported that long delays had cleared following the accident. The incident had previously caused congestion extending to junction 8 of the M5 and back to junction 7 at Great Barr.

Drivers are reminded to remain vigilant for potential delays and to exercise caution on the roads following such incidents. The situation highlights the importance of safe driving and awareness of road conditions, especially during peak travel periods.
