Sports Television Pioneer Geoffrey Mason Passes Away at 85

Geoffrey Mason, a prominent figure in sports television production and a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame, passed away on March 10, 2024, at the age of 85. Mason’s extensive career, which spanned over five decades, significantly influenced how sports are presented on television across various major networks, including ABC Sports, ESPN, NBC, and Fox.

Mason’s remarkable achievements included winning 24 Emmy Awards and being inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2010. His contributions to the industry were recognized by many, including Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, who stated, “Geoff Mason was a friend and a colleague who had a storied career, touching just about every corner of the sports television industry.” Iger emphasized Mason’s passion for his work, reflecting on his “prodigious work ethic” and “constant love and enthusiasm” for the projects he undertook.

Mason’s career included pivotal roles during significant events, such as the coordinating producer for ABC’s coverage of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where he handled the tragic terrorist attack. He also contributed to the coverage of numerous high-profile sports events, including the Super Bowl, the World Series, the FIFA World Cup, and “Monday Night Football.” His expertise extended to golf and tennis majors, the Tour de France, the Indianapolis 500, horse racing’s Triple Crown, and sailing’s America’s Cup.

Mason’s journey in sports television began in 1967 as a production associate at ABC Sports. He graduated from Duke University and served in the U.S. Navy before embarking on his distinguished career. His insights and leadership were instrumental in shaping the sports broadcasting landscape.
