A hairdresser from North Berwick has received approval to establish a salon in her back garden, marking a significant shift in her business strategy. Emma Combe, who has over 20 years of experience in the hairdressing industry, plans to convert a garden room at her home on Dundas Avenue into a new workspace.
The proposal was greenlit by East Lothian Council, although with specific conditions. The council stipulated that the salon may only be used by Combe or future owners of the property, prohibiting the involvement of independent contractors. This decision reflects a growing trend of home-based businesses, particularly in the wake of the pandemic.
In her application, Combe expressed her intention to downscale her operations to provide a more personalized service. She aims to see approximately six clients a day and plans to operate three days a week, avoiding weekends when she typically works on location for events such as photo shoots and weddings.
According to the planners, the proposed salon aligns with national policies regarding home working and micro-businesses. They noted that the salon’s size and nature would not disrupt the residential character of the area or negatively affect the amenities of neighboring properties.
The council’s decision included a directive to limit the salon’s operating hours to between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. This restriction aims to safeguard the residential amenity of the surrounding community, ensuring that the hairdressing business operates in a manner compatible with the neighborhood.
In their statement, the planners acknowledged that the use of the garden room as a hairdressing salon does not significantly alter the residential environment. They emphasized that such establishments can be beneficial when they are appropriately managed and integrated into the local setting.
As Combe embarks on this new chapter of her career, she joins a growing number of professionals who are adapting their businesses to offer tailored services from home, reflecting the evolving landscape of work and entrepreneurship.
