UPDATE: India could play a crucial mediating role in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, according to Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin. This statement comes as Shahin visits New Delhi for the 2nd India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, co-chaired by India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday, October 14, 2023.
Shahin emphasized India’s unique position due to its strong ties with both Israel and Palestine, making it a prime candidate to facilitate a two-state solution. In an exclusive interview with RT India, Shahin stated, “Countries that have good relations with both can play a very important role in bridging and closing the gap.” As the situation in Gaza escalates, she called upon India for vital humanitarian and economic support, alongside diplomatic backing in international forums.
The Foreign Minister acknowledged the current war in Gaza, underlining the urgency for peace. “If India wants to, it could mediate,” Shahin asserted, reflecting a sense of hope that India’s influence can help pave the way for a resolution. She underscored the Palestinian leadership’s pressing need for international advocacy for a sovereign, independent state.
Shahin also addressed the United States’ role in the conflict, especially following Donald Trump‘s return to office, noting that the US remains Israel’s strongest ally with unparalleled influence in the region. While she welcomed a US-brokered partial ceasefire in Gaza, she insisted that it is essential to sustain this ceasefire and fully implement Trump’s proposed peace plan.
“We would like the Board of Peace to bring us closer to independence,” she said, stressing that immediate priorities include establishing peace in Gaza, facilitating humanitarian aid, and initiating reconstruction efforts. Shahin highlighted the alarming situation in the West Bank, advocating for comprehensive attention to the entire Palestinian state under occupation.
The Palestinian Authority is actively seeking global support to address these pressing humanitarian needs. As the conflict continues, the potential for India to step into a mediating role could have significant implications for peace efforts in the region.
