Healthy Baby Boy Born in Kolasin After Years Without Births

A healthy baby boy was born in Kolasin, Montenegro, late on the night of March 15, 2024, marking a significant event for the town after years without local births. The delivery took place at the Kolasin Emergency Medical Service, where a mother from the area unexpectedly gave birth when she could not reach the hospital in Podgorica.

The mother began experiencing contractions a few days prior to her due date. As the situation developed, it became clear that she would not make it to the capital for the delivery. The family returned to the Emergency Medical Service in Kolasin, where a skilled team swiftly organized the birth. Led by Dr. Lazar Dragisic, the team included medical technicians Tine Stanisic, Mihailo Scekic, and Slavko Radevic. Their efficient response ensured a successful and safe delivery.

Dr. Dragisic praised the team’s professionalism and the mother’s bravery, stating, “We reacted quickly and expertly, and the most important thing is that both mother and baby are well. It was a natural birth. We are here to meet the needs of the citizens and provide them with safety, while also assisting nature in doing its work.” He emphasized that the Kolasin Emergency Medical Service was fully equipped for childbirth, which provided additional reassurance during the intervention.

This newborn boy is notable for being the first child born in Kolasin in over a decade. The absence of a functioning maternity hospital in the town has meant that local women have typically had to travel to Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, or Berane for childbirth.

The Emergency Medical Service facility itself underwent significant renovations in May 2024, with upgrades costing over €36,000. Dr. Dragisic expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort of his colleagues, highlighting the mutual trust established during the procedure.

“This experience reminded us that there is no greater honor than being present and providing professional assistance when a new life comes into the world,” he concluded.

The return of childbirth to Kolasin represents a hopeful sign for the community, as families can now welcome new members in their hometown.
