Walsall Primary School Achieves ‘Exceptional’ Ofsted Rating

A primary school in Walsall has made history by becoming the first institution in the West Midlands to receive an ‘exceptional’ rating from Ofsted, the UK’s education watchdog. This recognition comes under Ofsted’s newly implemented inspection system, which aims to provide a more comprehensive assessment of schools.

In November 2023, Ofsted conducted its inspection of Goldsmith Primary Academy, where the school was awarded the highest possible grades in three key areas: inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. The academy also achieved a strong standard in other areas, including achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum, teaching, and early years education.

Ofsted’s revamped inspection approach replaces the previous one-word ratings such as “outstanding” and “inadequate” with a broader grading system. This change is designed to offer parents a more nuanced understanding of school performance. Schools are now evaluated across a range of categories, from ‘exceptional’ to ‘urgent improvement.’

In the official report, Ofsted praised the leadership at Goldsmith Primary Academy, stating, “Leaders have an astute and precise understanding of the school’s strengths and priorities.” The report highlighted the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of high aspirations, which benefits all pupils.

The inspection noted, “Their relentless focus on removing barriers for disadvantaged pupils has had a transformational impact on their academic outcomes, attendance, and wellbeing.” This commitment to inclusivity is evident in the school’s ethos, where pupils feel exceptionally supported and contribute to a culture of respect and acceptance.

The exceptional personal development programme at Goldsmith Primary Academy has been recognized as a significant factor in enhancing pupils’ character and aspirations. The report emphasized that leaders prioritize pupils’ wellbeing, ensuring they play a central role in the school community.

Goldsmith Primary Academy’s achievement marks a significant milestone in the West Midlands, setting a benchmark for other schools in the region. As Ofsted continues to implement its new inspection framework, the emphasis on comprehensive evaluations may encourage more schools to strive for excellence in all areas of education.
