URGENT UPDATE: In a shocking incident, Keilan Roberts, 21, has been confronted by police just minutes after a horrific crash that claimed the life of 17-year-old Chloe Hayman in Fochriw, South Wales. The crash occurred in the early hours of July 24, 2022, while Roberts was under the influence of a cocktail of drugs, including cocaine, ketamine, and ecstasy, alongside alcohol.
Newly released police bodycam footage reveals a disoriented Roberts holding a bottle of Peroni beer shortly after the crash. Officers approached him, with one stating, “I’m just going to speak with the man who is thought to be the driver.” Roberts confirmed he was behind the wheel, revealing the tragic circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
The night began at a nightclub, where Roberts offered to drive Hayman home. However, after changing plans, Roberts asked friends to drop him off at his car instead. This decision ultimately led to the crash that resulted in Hayman’s death from fatal chest injuries.
The footage, now featured in the Channel 4 series “999: What Happened Next,” shows Roberts admitting to police that he had consumed multiple drinks, stating, “I know for a fact I’m going to fail this breathalyser.” He later confirmed his belief that he had been drinking to “take the edge off,” complicating police efforts to assess his intoxication level at the time of the crash.
Roberts was initially sentenced to three years and nine months in June 2023, which was later increased to five years and three months following an appeal by the Attorney General’s Office. He is also banned from driving for an extended period of 12 years and 7.5 months.
The emotional toll of this tragedy is profound. Chloe’s mother, Danielle O’Halloran, described her loss as leaving her “utterly broken,” stating, “If anything, it hurts more and more each day.” Her stepmother, Alix Hayman, characterized Chloe as a “fiercely loyal” individual, expressing the devastation caused by this incident.
As the legal repercussions continue to unfold, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence. The ongoing discussions surrounding road safety and drug use highlight the urgent need for awareness and prevention measures.
