A recent celebration marked the achievements of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority’s Cysylltu Natur 25×25 project, which focused on nature restoration efforts in North Pembrokeshire. The event, held on January 24, 2024, in Cwm Gwaun, brought together volunteers, farmers, and staff instrumental in advancing ecological initiatives across the region.
Funded by the Welsh Government through the Nature Networks Programme, the project aimed to enhance ecological connectivity and resilience by restoring habitats on a large scale. Attendees learned about the extensive conservation activities undertaken throughout the northern section of the National Park. These efforts included restoring grazing practices on Rhos pasture to benefit the marsh fritillary butterfly and southern damselfly populations, as well as specialized work to conserve rare lichens.
The project also involved volunteer-led monitoring of species such as choughs, dormice, and harvest mice. Additionally, it focused on safeguarding greater horseshoe bat hibernation sites and implementing targeted actions against invasive species that threaten vital habitats.
The collaboration among volunteers, farmers, land managers, and contractors proved crucial to the project’s success. Their local knowledge, practical skills, and long-term commitment have significantly contributed to preserving Pembrokeshire’s unique landscapes and wildlife.
Mary Chadwick, Conservation Officer for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, expressed her appreciation for the collaborative spirit of the project: “Cysylltu Natur 25×25 has shown what can be achieved when farmers, volunteers, and conservation specialists work together with a shared aim. From monitoring some of our most elusive species to restoring and protecting habitats, the dedication of everyone involved has made a real difference for nature across the National Park.”
As the Cysylltu Natur 25×25 project reaches its conclusion, the momentum garnered will continue. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority plans to build on this success through the next phase of nature recovery work under the NNF4 Cysylltiadau Naturiol/Naturally Connected initiative. This effort will ensure ongoing protection and enhancement of habitats for future generations, maintaining the legacy of the project while promoting a sustainable environment.
The celebration not only highlighted the significant achievements of the past few years but also reinforced the importance of community engagement in ecological restoration. As these efforts continue, the collaborative model established through Cysylltu Natur 25×25 sets a precedent for future conservation initiatives in Pembrokeshire and beyond.
