BREAKING: £35 million in funding for cross-community and cross-border initiatives has just been announced under the EU Peaceplus programme. This substantial 40 million euro investment aims to foster stronger local relationships and create lasting connections across communities in Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.
The funding, which provides grants of up to 100,000 euro for individual projects, is designed to empower organizations to tailor activities that meet local needs. Stormont Communities Minister Gordon Lyons emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it “will support smaller organizations working at a local level to make a direct contribution to their communities.”
Lyons further noted that these groups often struggle to access necessary funds but have the potential to create significant impacts in their areas. “The fund has the potential to support exciting and diverse activities across sports, the arts, heritage, and other themes offering a chance for everyone to get involved,” he said.
The funding initiative has garnered support from Dara Calleary, the Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, who stated, “This important investment will strengthen our communities and leave a lasting legacy across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.”
This announcement comes as part of the Change Maker Funding Programme, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The overall budget for the Peaceplus programme totals 1.14 billion euro, co-funded by the EU, the UK and Irish governments, as well as the Northern Ireland Executive.
