A 21-year-old student, Hattie Sheppard, experienced an unexpected life change when she gave birth without knowing she was pregnant. Hattie, who had been enjoying a gap year in Australia with her boyfriend, Bailey Cheadle, found herself in labour after a series of adventures, including a thrilling 100mph slingshot ride.
The couple arrived in Australia in July 2022, looking to make the most of their time abroad before returning to university in York. Over the months, they engaged in various activities, from partying to water sports. Hattie described herself as an “adrenaline junkie,” and her time in Australia included moments of excitement, such as jumping off boats and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the Gold Coast.
On January 13, 2023, Hattie began experiencing abdominal pain that she initially attributed to a stomach bug. After taking pain relief, the discomfort intensified and shifted to one side of her abdomen. Believing it could be appendicitis, she sought medical attention at Gold Coast University Hospital.
During an ultrasound, Hattie received the shocking news that she was in labour. “I thought this was impossible as I’m on the pill,” she recounted. The medical staff informed her that she was indeed about to have a baby. This revelation came as a complete surprise, as Hattie had shown no typical signs of pregnancy.
Following the unexpected diagnosis, Hattie gave birth to her daughter, Isla-Grace Cheadle, at 12:47 PM on January 14, 2023. Isla-Grace weighed 6lbs 7oz. Hattie later learned that her placenta had positioned itself at the front of her abdomen, preventing her from feeling the baby’s movements, while Isla-Grace developed near her spine, resulting in no visible bump.
Reflecting on the experience, Hattie expressed joy despite the initial shock. “I honestly could not be happier. It’s the strangest thing that could have happened, but it feels normal,” she stated. She noted that her weight gain had been attributed to an increase in her medication for Graves’ disease, a condition that typically complicates pregnancy.
Bailey, equally taken aback by the news, shared his thoughts on the sudden arrival of their daughter. “When Hattie woke me up, I was a bit out of it,” he said. After hearing their baby’s first cry, his immediate love for Isla-Grace was profound, despite the couple not having the typical bonding experience during pregnancy.
As they prepare to return home to celebrate their family’s new addition, Hattie described Isla-Grace as the perfect “anniversary gift” as she and Bailey approach their one-year relationship milestone on January 25, 2023. The couple is now making plans to introduce their daughter to family and friends back in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
The remarkable story of Hattie and Bailey serves as a reminder that life can take unexpected turns, bringing joy and surprise in the most unanticipated moments.
