Bonhams Launches New US Headquarters in Manhattan’s Steinway Hall

Bonhams has officially opened its new US headquarters at 111 West 57th Street in Manhattan, marking a significant shift from its previous location on Madison Avenue. This new home, set within the historic Steinway Hall, features a blend of neoclassical architecture and modern design, positioning the auction house in the heart of one of New York’s most affluent areas.

The new headquarters spans an impressive 42,000 square feet, combining the iconic Steinway Rotunda with an 80-foot glass atrium. This design aims to create an inviting atmosphere for art enthusiasts, fostering a cultural destination that goes beyond traditional auction houses. The facility includes two auction rooms, a triple-height gallery, and various spaces for exhibitions and public programming.

Inaugural Exhibitions Showcase Cultural Legacy

To celebrate its grand opening, Bonhams is hosting a series of exhibitions that reflect its commitment to art and culture. The centerpiece, titled Striking a Chord, draws inspiration from the musical heritage of Steinway Hall. This exhibition features works by renowned artists such as John Chamberlain, Francis Bacon, Banksy, and Constantin Brancusi. It explores the intersection of art and music, illustrating how creativity transcends visual boundaries to evoke emotion and atmosphere.

Among the highlights is the 1919 Steinway & Sons Model B Grand Piano, famously played by Elton John during the recording of his 1974 album Caribou. This piano, located in the Rotunda, will be featured in opening festivities and is set to be auctioned in the upcoming Masters of Pop sale scheduled for April.

Upstairs, the exhibition Modern Cuban Painters from Havana to New York pays homage to the landmark 1944 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. This collection includes significant works from the original exhibit, showcasing artists like Wifredo Lam, Mario Carreño, Cundo Bermúdez, Mariano Rodríguez, and Amelia Peláez.

Redefining the Auction Experience

Lilly Chan, US Managing Director at Bonhams, commented on the impact of the new flagship location, stating, “Opening our new US flagship marks a defining moment for Bonhams. This building enables a more experiential approach to the way we engage with collectors, audiences, and partners – bringing together exhibitions, auctions, and public programming in a far more expansive and meaningful way.”

In addition to its inaugural exhibitions, Bonhams will feature selections from its February online sales, including Modern and Contemporary Art and a major work by Osman Hamdi Bey. Other anticipated highlights include pieces from the biannual Cuban art sale and the Heavyweights & Headliners: Legends in Sports and Rock collection.

Bonhams’ new headquarters not only represents a physical relocation but a strategic expansion that aims to enhance the cultural landscape of New York City and engage a broader audience of art lovers and collectors.
