FIBA Names David Mirkovic Among Europe’s Top Future Basketball Stars

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has recognized young talents by including the Montenegrin basketball player David Mirkovic in its prestigious list of 20 promising European players under the age of 20. This marks the third consecutive year that FIBA has compiled this list, highlighting players who are making significant impacts in international clubs, college programs, and NBA teams.

Mirkovic, who joined the Illinois basketball team in the summer of 2022, is currently enjoying a strong debut season in the NCAA. He has averaged 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, showcasing impressive shooting percentages of 47 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from three-point range. In a recent match against Wisconsin, which ended in a narrow overtime loss for Illinois (92-90), Mirkovic contributed 12 points and secured six rebounds, further cementing his role on the team.

According to FIBA’s announcement, the selection for this list was based on players’ career achievements, current impact, and long-term potential. The only stipulation for inclusion is that players must have been born in 2006 or later. Notably, the players are listed alphabetically rather than ranked, emphasizing the talent across the board.

Prior to joining Illinois, Mirkovic gained valuable experience playing two full seasons in the ABA League. This background appears to have paid off, as he has made immediate contributions to his college team. FIBA noted that Mirkovic’s greatest assets are his combination of height, mobility, and shooting ability from various positions on the court.

Standing at 205 centimeters, Mirkovic has the capacity to make challenging shots after dribbling and finish difficult plays through contact in the paint. His height also allows him to excel in rebounding, and he has demonstrated good vision for assisting teammates from the post. With this blend of size, versatile shooting, and productivity as a rebounder, it is easy to see why Mirkovic has captured the attention of NBA scouts. FIBA indicates that he is expected to become a key player for the Montenegrin national team in the foreseeable future.

As Mirkovic continues to develop his skills in the NCAA, basketball enthusiasts and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how his career unfolds on both the collegiate and professional stages.
