Festival Park Faces Traffic Chaos as Lidl Construction Continues

Shoppers at Festival Park are experiencing significant delays as a major road remains closed due to ongoing construction for a new Lidl supermarket. The closure affects Pavilion Drive, specifically between Cobridge Road and the junction with Greyhound Way, resulting in heavy traffic congestion, particularly on weekends.

Ongoing Road Closure Impacts Traffic Flow

The closure, initiated on January 12, 2024, is part of a 12-week project approved by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The purpose of the roadworks is to facilitate the completion of drain connections, kerbing, and alterations to traffic islands. As a result, shoppers have been redirected to access the retail park via alternative routes, including Greyhound Way off Waterloo Road and Festival Way by the fly-over.

These alternative routes have also seen increased traffic as visitors try to navigate the area. Additionally, Cobridge Road has become congested, as motorists seek to bypass the traffic lights at Greyhound Way, compounding the overall traffic issues.

Lidl Expansion Plans in North Staffordshire

The construction of this new Lidl store marks the chain’s expansion in the region, as it aims to open its tenth supermarket in North Staffordshire. Currently, Lidl operates stores in Leek, Longton, Stoke, Burslem, Hanley, Newcastle, Bentilee, Tunstall, and Kidsgrove. The introduction of this new location is expected to enhance shopping options for local residents, but the immediate impact on traffic flow has raised concerns among frequent shoppers.

As the road closure continues, local authorities have put up warning signs to inform drivers of the situation, urging patience during this construction period. The city council aims to complete the necessary works as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimize disruption.

Residents and shoppers are encouraged to plan their visits accordingly, especially during peak hours, to avoid the heaviest traffic congestion. The anticipated opening of the new Lidl supermarket is expected to draw further interest and traffic to the area once completed.
