The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across the UK, effective until Sunday, February 15, 2024. While most regions will be affected on Saturday, areas in Kent and Suffolk are expected to experience milder conditions.
Forecasters predict that heavy snowfall could disrupt travel, particularly in higher ground areas, beginning Saturday night and continuing into Sunday morning. Icy patches are likely to form on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, raising concerns about driving safety.
Essential Preparations for Drivers
With treacherous driving conditions anticipated, the RAC recommends that drivers carry a basic winter car kit. One crucial item to include is an empty fuel can, which allows drivers to safely transport fuel from a petrol station to their vehicle if they run out. It is important to note that carrying a full can is not advisable due to the risk of leaking hazardous fumes.
“In an ideal world, you would plan your journey to include fuel stops, but sometimes things don’t go to plan. If you find yourself without fuel, it’s essential to have an empty fuel can available,”
the RAC stated to the Met Office.
Additional items recommended for packing include food, warm clothing, and a phone charger. These essentials will help drivers stay warm and contact for assistance if needed. The RAC also suggests having a set of snow socks, which are high-grip fabric covers fitted over the car’s driven wheels, to enhance traction in snowy conditions.
