This gesture, described by many as humiliating, came from officials in Golestan Province, who reportedly visited the homes of the deceased. According to messages reviewed by the news outlet Iran International, groups of six to 10 commanders from the Revolutionary Guards and provincial authorities warned families against publicizing their stories while providing the government’s narrative on the protests.
Witnesses claim that officials would leave behind a folder containing a certificate of appreciation along with one or two gift cards, each valued at 50 million rial, equivalent to £28. Families expressed their outrage, interpreting the offer as an attempt to silence them and prevent any legal action regarding the circumstances surrounding their loved ones’ deaths.
Government Response to Protests
The protests that swept across Iran were fueled by widespread discontent over clerical rule and a struggling economy. In January 2023, the Iranian government introduced an “economic relief” plan, offering citizens £5 a month in vouchers to quell dissent. President Masoud Pezeshkian announced the initiative, stating that it was crucial for officials to engage with the public to address societal issues.
Pezeshkian acknowledged that many of the problems faced by the Iranian populace stemmed from governmental actions. He emphasized the importance of listening to citizens’ concerns and stated, “Society cannot be appeased or calmed through coercion or improper methods.”
The crackdown on protests has had a devastating toll, with the verified death count exceeding 7,000 individuals, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. Their report lists the total deaths at 7,005, including 214 members of government forces. This grim statistic highlights the ongoing crisis as families continue to grapple with loss while facing governmental pressures to remain silent.
