Montenegro Remains EU’s Leading Candidate, Says President Milatović

President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, recently communicated with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to discuss Montenegro’s progress towards European Union membership. This conversation focused on the challenges of EU enlargement, geopolitical dynamics, and the ongoing accession process.

Milatović emphasized that Montenegro remains the most advanced candidate for EU membership, having successfully closed 13 chapters in the accession negotiations. He expressed a strong desire to accelerate the process further by closing the remaining chapters by the end of the year.

Focus on Rule of Law and Reforms

In his statement, Milatović highlighted the importance of concentrating efforts on chapters 23 and 24, which pertain to the rule of law, justice, freedom, and security. He noted that achieving measurable reforms in these areas is essential for Montenegro’s continued progress.

Additionally, Milatović invited Kallas to visit Montenegro in anticipation of the upcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit. He stated, “The essence, not the form, will be the measure of our success,” underscoring the need for tangible outcomes rather than superficial achievements.

As Montenegro navigates the complexities of its EU membership bid, the emphasis on concrete reforms in governance and security will play a crucial role in determining its future within the bloc. The discussions with Kallas reflect Montenegro’s commitment to not only meeting EU standards but also to becoming a pivotal player in regional stability and cooperation.

Through these efforts, Montenegro aims to solidify its position as a leader in the EU accession process, setting a benchmark for its Western Balkan neighbors.
