The UK Government has announced that Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander will embark on a week-long trade and defence mission to Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. The visit, set to begin in March 2024, aims to enhance security cooperation and expand economic ties across the Indo-Pacific region.
Alexander’s trip will focus on fostering closer defence-industrial collaboration, particularly in naval shipbuilding and advanced defence manufacturing. The Scotland Office has emphasized that trade and international security will be central themes throughout the mission, with planned meetings involving government ministers and business leaders in each country.
The agenda includes attending two international performances of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Brisbane and Auckland, an event regarded as a major cultural export from Scotland. The government articulated that this visit comes amidst a backdrop of “heightened global instability,” underscoring its importance in reinforcing defence partnerships with key allies.
Australia plays a significant role in the AUKUS partnership, a trilateral security pact involving Australia, the UK, and the United States. In 2025, the UK signed a treaty committing to 50 years of security cooperation in the region, highlighting the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific. Officials have indicated that Alexander’s discussions will delve into enhancing collaboration, especially in sectors where Scotland’s industrial capabilities are competitive.
The Scotland Office has characterized the local industry as possessing “world-leading expertise” in naval shipbuilding and defence manufacturing. In addition to defence discussions, the mission will also prioritize trade expansion. Alexander is expected to advocate for Scottish businesses, aiming to attract new investment into Scotland.
Before the trip, Alexander stated that the mission is designed to support exporters and strengthen Scotland’s position within the broader UK trade framework. “This visit is about speaking up for Scottish businesses and Scottish exporters,” he expressed, underlining the benefits derived from the UK’s extensive trade reach.
He further emphasized the necessity of defence cooperation in light of current global uncertainties, stating, “At a time of significant global uncertainty, it has never been more important to stand shoulder to shoulder with our closest allies.” Alexander looks forward to discussing ways to deepen defence cooperation, reinforcing safety and security both regionally and globally.
On the trade front, he expressed determination to promote Scottish business interests. “This visit is an opportunity to open doors for Scottish exporters, attract investment that creates economic growth and well-paid jobs back at home, and show that Scotland is open for business on the global stage,” he said.
