Two British nationals tragically lost their lives in an avalanche while skiing in France’s Val d’Isère resort on February 13, 2024. The victims, identified as Stuart Leslie, 46, and Shaun Overy, 51, were part of a group skiing off-piste under the guidance of an instructor when they were caught in the avalanche.
Rescue services discovered their bodies approximately 400 metres down the Manchet valley, a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with skiing in unstable conditions. A third victim, a French national skiing independently above the group, also perished in the incident.
Both Leslie and Overy had professional commitments back in the UK. Leslie served as a sales and marketing director for Barratt Redrow, while Overy operated a plumbing business in Wimbledon, southwest London. Friends and family have expressed their grief and shared heartfelt tributes on social media, highlighting the vibrant lives the men led.
Tributes and Remembrances
In a moving tribute, Craig Hunter, a close friend of Leslie, described him as a “true legend.” Hunter recalled, “He lived life to the absolute maximum — he packed 10 men’s lives into one.” Their shared experiences included travel across various countries, including Spain, the UK, and the United Arab Emirates. Hunter emphasized the joy and laughter they shared, underscoring Leslie’s adventurous spirit.
The avalanche occurred shortly after Storm Nils deposited significant amounts of fresh snow in the region, resulting in what authorities have termed a “very unstable snow cover.” The piste director for Val d’Isère, Cédric Bonnevie, stated that the cause of the avalanche remains unclear, contributing to the ongoing investigation.
Ongoing Investigations
In line with standard procedure for fatal skiing accidents, a manslaughter investigation is currently being conducted by the CRS Alpes mountain rescue police. This investigation aims to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic event and determine whether any negligence was involved.
As the community mourns the loss of these two individuals, the incident has sparked discussions about skiing safety, particularly in off-piste areas. The risks associated with skiing, especially in unpredictable weather conditions, serve as a stark reminder for both experienced and novice skiers alike.
The deaths of Stuart Leslie and Shaun Overy have resonated deeply within their circles and beyond, highlighting the fragility of life and the importance of safety while enjoying outdoor sports. Their stories will live on through the memories shared by friends and family who cherish the moments spent with them.
