CODE The Loft, Edinburgh’s first capsule-bed hostel, has reopened following an extensive refurbishment, introducing the UK’s first full-height Japanese-style sleeping pods. Located on Rose Street, this innovative accommodation aims to enhance the guest experience by offering a unique blend of comfort and privacy.
Revamping the Capsule Experience
Since its launch in 2014, CODE The Loft has sought to provide a distinctive alternative to traditional hostels. The recent renovations were inspired by a research trip to Japan, where managing director Andrew Landsburgh and his team explored the concept of capsule accommodation. The new sleeping pods, described as “micro-rooms,” offer enhanced features such as built-in storage, charging ports, custom mattresses, and noise-reducing technology.
“Visiting Tokyo’s capsule hotels was genuinely transformative,” Landsburgh stated. “We loved the feeling of the full-height capsules; it was like having your own small room—private and peaceful—without sacrificing quality or comfort.” This philosophy has shaped the design of the new capsules, which are part of a female-only dormitory that overlooks the city centre.
According to Jamie Greig, Head of Projects and Design at CODE, the design process involved learning from past experiences in various capsule accommodations. “Every detail came from real experience, staying in capsules of every shape and size over the years and asking ourselves what we always wished they had,” Greig noted. The focus remains on making travel easier and more personal for guests.
Growth of Capsule Hotels in Europe
The rise of capsule hotels reflects changing trends in the hospitality sector across major European cities, including London, Paris, and Amsterdam. These unique accommodations have been driving substantial growth in the market. Last year, plans were announced for a new 242-pod Japanese-inspired capsule hotel in Edinburgh, near St Andrew Square. The development aims to transform a vacant six-storey property into a tech-enabled capsule hostel featuring a rooftop bar and restaurant.
The renovation of CODE The Loft not only enhances its offerings but also positions it as a key player in the expanding market for capsule accommodation. With its innovative sleeping pods and updated amenities, the hostel aims to attract both local and international travellers looking for a unique and comfortable experience in the heart of Edinburgh.
