Botalys and Biohm have unveiled a new formulation concept aimed at enhancing post-workout recovery, targeting multiple biological systems. This innovative solution is designed for the active nutrition market and addresses the diverse recovery needs of individuals engaged in regular physical activity. By combining their unique ingredients, the two companies aim to provide a comprehensive recovery approach that supports both immune function and muscle metabolism.
The formulation features Botalys’ proprietary red ginseng, standardized to over 12% total ginsenosides, including more than 10% rare ginsenosides such as Rg3, Rg5, and Rk1. Red ginseng is known to assist in muscle and systemic recovery by enhancing mitochondrial energy production and cellular resistance. In conjunction, Biohm’s postbiotic product, Phorum, utilizes a three-strain heat-treated probiotic blend, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and Saccharomyces boulardii. This combination acts on the gut-immune axis, promoting balanced inflammatory signaling.
The dual-action mechanism of these ingredients is a response to the varied challenges faced after intense exercise. Physical activity not only induces muscle soreness but also places stress on the immune system, leading to inflammatory responses and increased oxidative load. Addressing these factors is crucial not only for athletes but also for anyone seeking to maintain an active lifestyle, according to Kristin Wilhoyte, Vice President of Marketing at Biohm.
Targeting Active Consumers
Botalys and Biohm are positioning their product to appeal to consumers who prioritize recovery as a vital aspect of long-term health. The formulation is suitable for integration into various products, including active lifestyle supplements, daily recovery formulas, functional beverages, wellness shots, and different forms such as powders, capsules, and stick packs.
Wilhoyte emphasized the flexibility this arrangement offers brands. “This gives brands flexibility in formulation design, dosage and positioning, rather than locking them into a fixed premix,” she noted. The ingredients are currently available for commercial use in the United States, with plans for broader international distribution contingent on local regulatory requirements.
This latest initiative follows a series of strategic collaborations for both companies. Last year, Botalys partnered with Haleon to create a high-purity, sustainable botanical ingredient, and also worked with Brightseed to utilize artificial intelligence in optimizing the bioactive expression of their plant supply. Similarly, Biohm has collaborated with ADM to launch microbiome formulations tailored to women aged 45 to 65, and previously partnered with Life Extension to develop a line of microbiome products.
While the collaboration between Botalys and Biohm is not a conventional strategic partnership, Wilhoyte clarified that it represents a concerted effort to combine two complementary ingredients for a specific purpose. “We see strong potential for brands to build on this multi-system recovery approach,” she concluded.
With the growing emphasis on recovery in the fitness and wellness sectors, this innovative formulation could meet the increasing demand for effective post-exercise solutions, ultimately enhancing the health and performance of active individuals across various demographics.
