At least four people lost their lives when a tourist boat capsized in Chuxiong, located in China’s Yunnan Province, on February 17, 2024. The incident occurred during the Lunar New Year celebrations, which typically bring families together for festive activities. Eyewitness accounts and video footage depict chaotic scenes as the boat, carrying a total of 26 passengers, suddenly overturned, sending everyone into the water.
The boat initially tilted to starboard before abruptly tipping to port. Passengers were reportedly not wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. One man was seen struggling to reach the starboard side before climbing onto the upturned hull as the vessel fully capsized. Emergency services responded swiftly, with reports confirming that by 20:30 local time, two fatalities had been confirmed and two others were receiving hospital treatment.
The final death toll later rose to four, although the identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed. Authorities believe they drowned in the incident. The condition of the 22 survivors remains unclear, as per local media reports. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
Tragic Context and Future Precautions
The Lianxiwan Wetland Park, where the tragedy unfolded, opened its doors in June 2025 and had already attracted around 150,000 visitors by November of that year. The park offers a variety of family-friendly attractions, including flower displays, camping, and lake cruises.
This tragic event follows another recent incident in Jiangsu Province, where at least eight individuals died in an explosion at a fireworks shop. According to the Donghai county government, the explosion was caused by a resident improperly setting off fireworks near the store. The Ministry of Emergency Management has since emphasized the need for stricter regulations on the production, transportation, and sale of fireworks to prevent future accidents.
In light of these incidents, local governments have been urged to enhance safety measures, particularly during the festive season of the Lunar New Year. This holiday, which begins with the first new moon following December’s winter solstice, is celebrated with red decorations, fireworks, family reunions, and the exchange of red envelopes containing money. The upcoming year of the Fire Horse will commence on February 17, 2026.
As the investigation into the boat capsizing continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of holiday festivities and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
