Kotor’s Winter Carnival Celebrates Tradition with Vibrant Festivities

The annual winter carnival festivities in Kotor concluded with a spectacular parade and the traditional trial and burning of the effigy known as Miron Tribulus, or Pirun. This year’s celebrations highlighted the enduring significance of the carnival, showcasing its roots in satire, creativity, and community spirit. The event reaffirmed Kotor’s reputation not just as a calendar highlight, but as a vibrant cultural tradition deeply embedded in the local identity.

The carnival was led by queen Teo Grgurović, who presided over a procession featuring 22 carnival groups, adorned in imaginative costumes and masks representing Kotor, Budva, and Herceg Novi. The presence of guest performers from Bela Crkva and Leskovac added an enriching dimension to the program, underscoring the strength of regional collaboration.

Among the participants were various local musical groups, including the Kotor and Đenovića city bands, as well as cheerleading teams “Fešta” and “Alisa” from Kotor, and “Modest” from Tivat. Notably, the elderly residents of the Grabovac Home from Risno also participated, enhancing the carnival’s inclusivity.

The youngest participants captivated the audience with their energy. Children from local kindergartens, recognized as the most numerous and joyful segment of the parade, marched alongside students from primary and secondary schools. Their enthusiasm brought a lively atmosphere to the event.

The carnival jury, consisting of president Vlasta Mandić and members Brano Maslovar and Dragana Mršulja, awarded special prizes to several groups. The award for the most cheerful carnival group went to the “Savo Ilić” Primary School for their mask titled “Kockalend.” The prize for the most creative mask was given to the Parent Council of “Njegoš” Primary School for their presentation, “Everyone to the Banja.”

The competition was fierce, with the Leskovac Carnival taking third place with their mask “Moonlight Shadow.” The second place was claimed by the largest carnival group, JPU “Radost,” for their portrayal of “Patient on Three Levels.” The top honor went to OJU “Museums” for their mask “Heritage is not Scenography.”

The closing evening on the bustling Arms Square featured an energetic performance by The Grupe and Bruno Rački with the band “Valovi,” providing a fitting finale to this year’s festivities.

The Traditional Winter Carnival of Kotor was organized by the Public Institution Cultural Center “Nikola Đurkovic”, with the support of the Kotor Tourist Organization and the municipality of Kotor. The event received sponsorship from various local businesses, including Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort, which served as the golden sponsor, along with numerous media partners.

This carnival not only showcases Kotor’s cultural heritage but also strengthens community bonds through shared celebration, creativity, and joy. The success of this year’s event promises an even more vibrant future for Kotor’s winter carnival traditions.
