Croydon Youth Club Launches Next Gen Rappers with DJ AG’s Help

UPDATE: A youth club in Croydon is making headlines for its promising impact on the next generation of rappers. The Legacy Youth Zone welcomed TikTok sensation DJ AG and newly appointed Music Ambassador DJ Semtex on February 21, 2023, showcasing the incredible talent of young artists in the area.

The event, held in Thornton Heath, highlighted the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent amid Croydon’s vibrant music scene. DJ AG, whose real name is Ashley Gordon, expressed his admiration for the young artists, stating, “The talent is amazing, but more importantly I love how respectful they are.”

Legacy Youth Zone provides a safe space for youth aged 8 to 19—and up to 25 for those with additional needs—to explore their musical abilities. With a state-of-the-art music studio, young rappers and producers can write lyrics, create beats, and record original tracks.

DJ Semtex, who has championed UK hip hop for decades, emphasized the importance of supporting young talent. “100 percent, the next generation of stars are already in the room. The starting point is giving them the education and getting them on the platforms,” he stated during the visit. His role as Music Ambassador is supported by the Sony Music UK Social Justice Fund, ensuring that these young voices are amplified.

The atmosphere at Legacy Youth Zone is electric, with young artists like MK, a recent graduate, already making waves. DJ Semtex praised MK’s recent release, “Adam and Ryan,” noting its storytelling prowess. “It’s incredible storytelling that’s on par with the greatest storytellers in hip hop,” he remarked.

For the youth involved, the club offers more than just music. Kyran, 17, reflected, “When I’m bored, instead of going outside and doing foolishness, I come here. It gives me a breath of fresh air.” Another member, Lee, 14, highlighted the importance of connection, saying, “It gets them together to make new friends.”

Legacy Youth Zone’s Chief Executive, Myke Catterall, stressed the critical need for such facilities in Croydon, especially after the loss of youth services in the area last year. “We see stats around poverty and serious youth violence, and that is not all Croydon represents. We are a safe space for young people,” he asserted.

As the youth club continues to thrive, the support from figures like DJ AG and DJ Semtex not only enhances the skills of these young rappers but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. The future of Croydon’s music scene looks bright, and with the right guidance, these young artists are poised to make a significant impact.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and the incredible talent emerging from Legacy Youth Zone, as they aim for success in the competitive music industry.
