Longtime Landlords of Southport’s Blue Anchor Prepare for Change

The landlords of the Blue Anchor pub in Southport, Merseyside, announced their decision to step back from their roles after more than a decade of managing the venue. Seb Lang and Lesley Curtin shared their plans to pass the bar to new management, citing that now is the right time for a change. The couple has been at the helm of this community-focused pub on Tithebarn Road for nearly 11 years.

The Blue Anchor, known for its welcoming atmosphere, has been a staple in the neighborhood rather than a historic coaching inn. Its location near the former Ash Street railway station historically catered to railway workers and passengers, contributing to its longstanding presence in the area.

In a heartfelt message posted online, Lang and Curtin described their decision as “difficult.” They reflected on their experiences, stating, “After nearly 11 amazing years, we’ve made the difficult decision that over the coming months it will be time for us to step back, put our feet up a little, and pass The Blue Anchor on to someone new.”

The couple expressed gratitude for the relationships they built during their time at the pub. They noted that many customers became friends, sharing countless memorable moments over busy weekends, darts and pool nights, and everyday conversations that define a true local pub.

Lang and Curtin also acknowledged the challenges faced by the pub industry in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. They commented, “Like many pubs, we’ve also had our share of challenges. We survived Covid and some very tough times along the way, but thanks to the amazing support from our customers and community, we got through it together.”

Proud of the pub’s current status, they hope the next landlord will uphold its role as a community hub. “The pub is running really well now and we’re proud to be handing over a great, thriving local,” they remarked. “We truly hope the next person will care for the pub, our staff, and the community around it, and continue what makes The Blue Anchor such a special place.”

As preparations begin for the transition to new management, Lang and Curtin invited patrons to share their cherished memories of the Blue Anchor online, leaving a lasting legacy of their time spent at the beloved establishment. They concluded their message with heartfelt thanks to the community, stating, “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the support, kindness and friendship you’ve shown us over the years — it really has meant the world to us.”
