UPDATE: Two individuals are currently fighting for their lives following a shocking stabbing incident at Huntingdon Station in Cambridgeshire last night. The British Transport Police responded to reports of a man attacking passengers with a large knife on a train at approximately 7:40 PM on November 1, 2023.
A total of 11 people were injured during the attack, with ten victims transported to hospitals and one self-presenting later that evening. As of this morning, two victims remain in critical condition, while four have been discharged.
Authorities swiftly apprehended two suspects: a 32-year-old Black British man and a 35-year-old British man of Caribbean descent. Both men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and are currently being held in separate police stations for questioning.
Superintendent John Loveless of British Transport Police provided a crucial update, stating, “Ten people were taken to hospital by ambulance and another person self-presented at hospital later that evening. While nine were initially believed to have life-threatening injuries, following assessment and treatment, four have been discharged and two patients remain in a life-threatening condition.”
Police declared a major incident soon after the attack, and while counter-terrorism units were involved, Superintendent Loveless emphasized that there is no indication this was a terrorist act. “We continue to work to establish the full circumstances and motivation for this incident. At this early stage, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes,” he added.
The scene at Huntingdon Station remains cordoned off, with police maintaining a strong presence. Witnesses reported seeing an alarming scene unfold, with passengers reportedly hiding in toilets to escape the chaos. One bystander, identified as Gavin, claimed he saw the attacker being tasered before arrest, while another witness, Olly Foster, described a heroic act where an older man intervened to protect a younger girl, sustaining injuries in the process.
Social media footage captured the rapid response from law enforcement, showcasing numerous emergency vehicles and armed police rushing to the scene. The attack reportedly began shortly after the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) train departed from Peterborough Station.
As a result of the incident, LNER has announced that travel disruptions on services between London Kings Cross and various destinations, including Lincoln, Doncaster, and Bradford Forster Square, are expected to continue through Monday. Passengers are advised to defer travel where possible.
This developing situation continues to unfold, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Stay tuned for further updates as more details emerge from this tragic incident.
