Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has urged the United States to engage diplomatically with Nigeria in response to rising tensions following comments from U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump recently designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” a classification that has drawn criticism and concern from various quarters in Nigeria.
In a statement shared on his verified social media account on October 15, 2023, Kwankwaso expressed his dismay over Trump’s remarks, emphasizing that Nigeria’s security issues are not rooted in religious or ethnic divisions. “The insecurity we face does not distinguish based on religion, ethnic or political beliefs,” Kwankwaso stated, highlighting the need for a more nuanced understanding of Nigeria’s challenges.
Kwankwaso called for a shift from what he termed “threats” to “constructive engagement,” advocating for technological and intelligence collaboration to address Nigeria’s security challenges. He suggested that the United States should provide advanced technology to help Nigerian authorities combat insecurity rather than exacerbating tensions with threatening rhetoric.
“It is vital for the United States to assist the Nigerian authorities with cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems,” he remarked. He also proposed that the Nigerian government appoint special envoys from its pool of distinguished diplomats to facilitate discussions with the American government, thereby fostering a more cooperative relationship.
In addition to these recommendations, Kwankwaso highlighted the importance of appointing permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests internationally. He believes that such steps would enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and effectiveness on the global stage.
Kwankwaso’s appeal extends beyond government actions; he called upon Nigerians to transcend political and religious divides during this critical moment. “To my fellow countrymen, this is an important moment where we should emphasise unity of belonging over division,” he stated, urging collective action in the face of external pressures.
As discussions about Nigeria’s security situation continue, Kwankwaso’s remarks underscore the need for diplomatic relations that focus on collaboration rather than confrontation. The ongoing dialogue with the United States presents an opportunity for both nations to strengthen their ties and work together towards sustainable solutions for Nigeria’s security challenges.
